How Does a High Efficiency Furnace Work?
High-efficiency furnaces are a great way to keep your home warm and comfortable during the winter, while keeping your utility bills and energy usage to a minimum. They use several strategies to do this, depending on the manufacturer of the furnace and the particular model.
How a High-Efficiency Furnace Saves Energy
Most high-efficiency furnaces combine several energy-saving systems into one unit to maximize their efficiency. Here are some of the common energy-saving features and how they work:
- Variable speed blower motors – Older furnaces often had single-speed motors, meaning that it was either off, or on at full speed. To control temperature and airflow, the entire furnace would be tuned on and off. Variable speed blower motors allow the motor speed and airflow to be adjusted as needed. When very little heat is required, such as on a mild winter day, the fan speed can be reduced for quieter operation and improved comfort. When a large amount of heat is required, the fan can be turned on a faster speed.
- Two-stage burners – Two-stage burners allow the heat output of the furnace to be adjusted according to the weather and interior conditions, similar to the variable-speed blower motor. When only a small amount of heat is necessary, the burners can be turned on at the “low” setting, and when more heat is called for, they can be switched to the “high” setting.
- Electronic ignition – Older furnaces used a pilot light to ignite the burners when necessary. This requires a small amount of gas to be burned continuously, wasting energy. An electronic ignition uses a piezoelectric crystal to generate a spark and light the burners only when heat is called for. This reduces natural gas usage and saves money on your utility bills.
- Condensing gas combustion systems – In a typical furnace, some of the heat from the combustion process is lost through the exhaust gases that exit through the flue system. In a condensing gas furnace, a second heat exchanger captures the heat from the exhaust gases to help heat your home. Not only does this save energy and money, but it also cools the gases enough to make the flue easier to install.
- Sealed combustion systems – In older furnaces, the air used for combustion is drawn from inside your home. Because this air has already been heated by the furnace, that energy is wasted. Sealed combustion furnaces draw the combustion air from outdoors, saving energy and increasing safety.
Together, these energy-saving features can combine to significantly reduce your utility costs.
